The Rabbi's Corner:
I'm truly honored by the opportunity to be a part of such a vibrant, diverse and growing community. The Downtown Synagogue is unique in its mission to provide an inclusive, egalitarian Jewish experience in lower Manhattan.
I was ordained by JTS in 2000. Prior to Rabbinical School, I had been a photographer and graphic artist, and earned my degree from the School of Visual Arts in Photography, (I'm probably the only SVA graduate ever to be ordained by the Seminary!). I am married to Richard Rosenbloom, an interior designer. With children from each of our prior marriages, as well as a mutual child, we have five children ranging in age from 16 years to three months. It's an interesting daily challenge to meet the variety of needs in a family as ours, and the solutions are often as surprising as they are creative!
Life in the 'family' of a congregation is similarly complex. Each person will have their own vision of what the synagogue and community ought to be, and we need to find a balance and mix that works. The best thing to do is to get involved. Participate in the planning of Adult Ed and other programming, sign up for the Hebrew School and participate in our unique Family Study Program, learn to take a part in leading services, help to shape our path for the future.
The upcoming Holiday season will provide many opportunities for us to meet in person. In addition to services for the Holidays, there is also a S'lichot observance on Saturday evening September 11th, as well as a High Holiday Workshop on September 8th. Both of these are opportunities to be together in community and prepare for Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. Click here for the complete schedule of events and services
