The Downtown Hebrew School

A Quality, Liberal and Fun Jewish Education

The weekly classes create a fun environment where the children can express and explore their Jewish culture. They are captivated with stories and games. They sing, dance, and paint. They practice Jewish rituals and learn about our rich heritage through holidays and stories. They learn and become familiar with Hebrew through songs and language. The experience does not stop at the classroom door: almost every week, the students bring home pieces of Jewish culture created during the class; dreidels, tasty latkes, matzah covers, challah bread, kiddush cups, graggers and more. They also bring home a zest for Jewish life and culture that brings new liveliness to the entire family's Jewish experience.

Lessons Learned Travel Home

"Judaism in a vacuum, something learned only in a classroom, with no strong ties linking what happens in that classroom to what happens in children's families and with the people and events in their Jewish community is just an academic exercise, with little meaning or resonance. Jews have always understood, whatever our religious practices or spiritual places, that we are part of a larger common enterprise, that our community and our family are our building blocks and that our Jewish identity, destiny and future of our children are all holistically connected."

- Iris Richman, Founding President of the Downtown Synagogue

The inaugural year was 2002 with 5 students. This year, we have three different age classes with a total of 24 students. For 2004-2005 we are planning 5 different age classes:

  • pre-K
  • Kindergarten
  • 1st Grade
  • 2nd Grade
  • 3rd Grade

Families with older students may make arrangements for individualized tutoring of skills in Hebrew, prayer, and Torah study for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, as our Hebrew school expands for full classes in all age groups.

Hebrew School Mission:

The Downtown Hebrew School will nurture and build the foundation of your children's Jewish identity for lifelong spiritual discovery. It will also nourish the connections between your family, the greater Downtown Synagogue Family and our Jewish community.
